Mount Kilimanjaro
This fairytale mountain is the highest one in Africa, 5896 metres above sea level and permanently snow-capped, and is also the highest “free-standing” mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro has two peaks that can be seen in Tarangire on a clear day.

There are coffee plantations and cultivated land at the foot of the mountain. Those wishing to climb it have several routes to choose from. Marangu (1550 m above sea level) is the usual starting point.

Mount Meru

A dormant volcano rising above 4500 m. To climb to the summit takes about two and a half days and allow one day for the descent.

Oldoinyo Lengai
This is Africa’s only presently active volcano. It is situated near Lake Natron and its name means God’s mountain.

At the moment there are no climbing or hiking tours at Oldoinyo Lengai.

Usambara Mountains
The Usambara Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc chain in the north-eastern part of the country. Their western and eastern ranges are divided by a 4 km wide valley of small villages and farms, and hiking trails cover the foothills and larger peaks. It is a hiker’s paradise, with dozens of varied treks from half a day to up to a week.

Bird watching is especially rewarding, and the views from the mountaintops stretch over the Maasai Steppe and, on a really clear day, as far as the Indian Ocean.
